While there are many types of methods and ways to quit smoking, many smokers have tried to go cold turkey at least once. Some people are able to successfully give up smoking this way. Others are not.
Most smokers, although they want to quit smoking, can’t really imagine life without their cigarettes. However, at some point in time, they understand the dangers of smoking at a head level and often times at a heart level, but it is still difficult to quit. Dragging out the quitting process, often times gives you opportunity to come up with reasons why you need to keep smoking or why you just can’t stop. Going cold turkey allows you to avoid many of those excuses. You don’t mull over the advantages and disadvantages of why you should or shouldn’t stop smoking, you just simply quit.
Going cold turkey is also less expensive then other quitting options. You will not have to pay for any costly nicotine patches, nicotine gum or pills that often have a high failure rate. The cold turkey method of quitting also allows you to shorten the amount of time that your body goes through withdrawals.
The cold turkey method is also believed to give people the greatest chance of quitting for good. Most smokers don’t realize that they are a drug addicts, because cigarettes are perfectly legal and can be purchased over the counter. However, nicotine is extremely addictive and even once you stop smoking, there still some nicotine in the body which makes it harder to quit. Like most drugs, if you don’t keep taking the drug, then you will suffer from distressing, withdrawal symptoms. However, the lower the amount of nicotine that you have your body, the lower the types and amounts of the withdrawals that you will experience. So when you suddenly stop smoking, then your body can immediately began flushing the nicotine out of your system and you can get through the withdrawal period faster.
Once the nicotine completely leaves your bloodstream, then you no longer have withdrawals and at this point, it is much easier to stop smoking. You will still have cravings from time to time. However, once the drug is out of your body, at this point it is mostly psychological. If you attempt to use nicotine replacement therapy, which reduces the amount of nicotine in your body slowly and over time or if you just attempt to reduce the number of cigarettes that you smoke everyday, your body will constantly be going through withdrawals and it will be harder for you to completely stop smoking.
