Quit Smoking Guide
Many times people do understand the harmful impacts of smoking, but still have a difficult time quitting. This could be for a variety of reasons, one being that they don’t know how. However, there are many great methods to help one stop smoking. To make the most of these available methods, one must be ready to commit to the process.
The first thing that you need to do is to make up your mind that you want to stop smoking. Now most smokers do feel this way. They want to stop smoking but feel like they can’t. So a good step in the right direction is to choose a date that you want to stop. The fact is, you won’t be able to quit smoking if you’re not ready. For many people, it is difficult to simply go cold turkey. If you have to choose a date that is week or even several weeks from now, that is fine. But pick a date and mark it on your calendar. Try to choose a time, where you don’t expect things to be especially stressful. Of course, you can not predict the future but do your best.
Next, you may need to convince yourself why it is important not smoke. Grab a sheet of paper and make a list of why it is important to stop smoking. Take that list, put it in a prominent place and read it each morning when you wake up and at the end of the day, to strengthen your resolve.
Often times, addictions have both a physical nature and psychological one. You may need to try to figure out why you smoke. To help you do this, you may want to write down when the smoke, where you are when you smoke, and what prompts you to do it. You may find that you tend to smoke more when you’re around certain people or in certain situations. You may need to cut these things out in your effort to stop smoking.
Another important thing to do is to simply get rid of all your cigarettes or the tobacco that is in your home. It’s much like the dieter. It is very easy to eat junk food, if you have it in your house. So if you are trying to quit smoking and get a craving, it will take you more effort to fulfill that craving if you have to get up and go to the store, which may give you time to convince yourself not to do it.
You also want to try to garner as much support as possible. Speak with your family and friends and tell them about your decision to quit smoking. This should do a couple of things. First of all, it should prompt them to help encourage you. If they don’t get the subtle hint, let them know that you would appreciate their support. It should also help provide some safeguards and boundaries for you. They can remind you that you made a commitment to quit smoking and this should also prompt them not to smoke while you are around. If it doesn’t, then kindly ask them not to smoke when you are around. Alternatively, you can join a smoking cessation support program which is provided by professionals.
Now when the date comes that you have set to stop smoking, then you need to stop smoking. To keep yourself encouraged, agree beforehand, on different ways that you can reward yourself to stay smoke free. This could include buying yourself a piece of clothing or a special type of food. Just choose anything that is personally satisfying for you.
Lastly, do not get discouraged. There will be times when you fail, you just have to start over and try again. Everybody has failed. The people who are ultimately successful are the people who keep trying. You are going to have to be resilient in your fight against smoke addiction.
